The Slovak audience makes the BBO 2008 THE BIG BIRTHDAY OPERA 2008

Project: Juraj Ďuriš and Gívan Belá

What is a birthday without a birthday song? Based on an original idea by the French artist Robert Filliou, we contribute to this year's Art's Birthday with a radio opera, connecting Bratislava, Brussels and Tokyo in a worldwide celebration.

BIG BIRTHDAY OPERA 2008

concept and description
2008-01-17

Idea

When we go to birthdays, once in a while there is the ultimate moment
in which the cake arrives, the champagne bottles are uncorked and ...
the (non)invited sing the obligate birthday song. Interestingly no one
refuses this on grounds that they have non-trained voices or cannot
remember the words too well. Also, notice this is really a
collaborative creation, and takes its aesthetical pleasures mostly from
the enthousiasme, spontaneity and ... dissonance of the expression (one
can argue the same for sport manifestations, protest marches, and even
church bells ringing). And what is a birthday without a song? I we come
together and celebrate, then let's sing! Together! For art's sake!

Rozhovor s DOROTHY STONE (USA)
Július Fujak

1. Intro hudba: Stephen L. Mosko: Indigenopus Music II: Flute (cca 1:00)

Privítanie hosťa, špičkovej flautistky, interpretky súčasnej hudby a hudby 20. storočia, skladateľky a dirigentky, zakladajúcej členky The California EAR Unit, p. Dorothy Stone.

2. skladba: Stephen L. Mosko: Native Songs and Dances (7:16)

2. otázka: SLM bol známy ako iniciátor vzniku Vášho súboru EARUNit r. 1981 a, mimochodom, aj priamou spoluprácou (tvorivou i organizačnou) s Johnom Cageom i Mortonom Feldmanom. S týmito velikánmi ho o. i. spájal hlboký rešpekt a úcta k interpretom ich hudby. Ako by ste popísali príbuznosti a zároveň odlišnosti hudby napr. Morton Feldmana a SLM?

3. skladba: Morton Feldman: Trio for Flutes (4:24)

3. otázka: Relácia Extempore

Technical description of composition:
This piece was composed using synthesized sounds, created in several programs (Absynth, Reaktor, Metasynth, C-sound). The mixing of the tape part was done in Protools.
Artistic description:
'Aphâr is a Hebrew word that means "dust".
This piece is inspired on the dream of Jacob, described in the Old Testament (Genesis
Chapter 28):
Jacob had a dream: He saw a stairway erected on the earth with its top reaching to the heavens. The angels of God were going up and coming down it and the Lord stood at its top. He said, I am the Lord, the God of your grandfather Abraham and the God of your father Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the ground you are lying on. Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth.
To climb Jacob's ladder is a very difficult process. Each step you take is harder than the previous one and takes more time and effort to accomplish. These steps are heavy, and the dust in your feet is spread around, and finally disappears. If you reach the top of the stair, everything else is gone, and a door closes to the rest of

Paola Samoggia: Italian Landscapes

Unusual Italian Landscapes is a project that, through sounds and musical noises, presents uncommon aspects of Italian landscapes.
The musical material has been produced using traditional instruments, synthesizers, noises that belong to other sonorous hemispheres or purely invented sounds. In the proposed unexplored auditory panorama, within the digital elaboration, sounds and noises cease to contrast with each other and become a primary means to make music.
At present there are three movements within the composition. However, more are in progress. The first tells of a Venice to be explored through slow strolls in the mists: narrow alleys suddenly leading to a small canal, the gurgling water under the rowing gondolas... all enveloped in thick wintry fog. Technically the piece has been produced using almost exclusively a synthesizer and an acoustic clarinet.
The second movement, "Dusky Sultry Padan Plain", presents a rather surreal aspect of the Padan Plain wrapped in the typical sultriness that characterises the summer season. Rising above the flat plains, a myriad of small and humble bell towers witnessing areas now populated only by elderly people and children. Religion remains an important force in these areas, maintaining aspects of bigotry and intolerance.

The clarinet was used here to present this roll of the drinking man, while computer music presents the shadows and acts as the creator of the atmosphere of the poem as well. Technical description of the composition (used material, hardware, software) Pro Tools

Artistic description of the composition
As its title suggests, Photogene is based on the interpretation of the visual phenomenon of 'afterimage' in the sonic world. Subtle and soft sound sections intermittently evoke the sense of an afterimage. The beginning is loud and dramatic, representing corporeal manifestation. Soft, flute-oriented sound comes later, implying unresolved, vague, ambiguous, even imaginative world. Through the dialog of two worlds, the piece intends to depict a constant flux in the manifestation and mystery of life.
